Cinderella was a young woman raised in the roughest, most neglected quarters of the sprawling city. She had no memory of her biological parents; she had been abandoned as a small child, left to navigate a harsh world alone. Eventually, a large, unkind family took her in—not out of charity, but of convenience. They needed cheap labor, and they quickly relegated Cinderella to the role of an unpaid household maid. Such was the grim reality of life in the poorer districts.

Despite the drudgery of her daily existence, the city was vast, and whenever she managed to slip away from her chores, Cinderella loved to wander. She found the wider world endlessly fascinating. One of her favorite sanctuaries was the local park. During her visits, the spring flowers were in full bloom, casting vibrant colors across the landscape. It felt as though there was magic everywhere.

She would often sit on a wooden bench, watching the birds chase one another through the branches, marveling at their carefree joy and excitement. Springtime was truly the best season; even the butterflies seemed playful, dancing through the sunlit air.

Yet, the moment she returned to the boarding house, the atmosphere plummeted. Her foster family was almost always in a foul mood. They would demand to know where she had been, secretly terrified that their hardworking maid might run away. After all, they had grown accustomed to living a comfortable life while doing next to nothing, relying entirely on Cinderella's endless labor.

Cinderella was utterly exhausted. She spent her mornings scrubbing floors in the cold dawn light, and her demanding step-sisters constantly forced her to clean up their rooms. She couldn't understand why her life couldn't be as bright and happy as the scenes she witnessed in the park.

Then, a sudden buzz of excitement swept through the household. Her step-sisters were buying gorgeous, vibrant new dresses in brilliant spring colors—pinks, yellows, and soft lavenders. Cinderella couldn't help but wonder what it would feel like to wear a pretty dress just once. But when she asked, her sisters merely scoffed and tossed her their worn-out hand-me-downs. The sisters were preparing to attend a grand masquerade ball across town, an exclusive event where the city's wealthiest elites—and the enigmatic young prince—would be gathering.

As day faded into night, Cinderella found herself slumped over the kitchen table, half-asleep while trying to finish the immense pile of laundry. Suddenly, a cheerful voice called out from the open window.

"Cindy!"

It was her kind-hearted neighbor from next door, using the affectionate nickname she had given her. Cinderella scrambled up immediately. "What is it?"

"There's a massive ball tonight, Cindy! You need to come with us. We're all going!"

"I can't," Cinderella replied, looking down at her ragged clothes. "I don't have anything to wear."

"Don't you worry about that for a second," the neighbor smiled warmly, pulling a lovely, simple dress from behind her back. "I have a spare dress you can borrow."

The neighbors in the poorer alleyways were always looking out for one another. Encouraged by her friend, Cinderella changed into the borrowed dress and went to the ball. Upon entering the dazzling ballroom, she spotted her step-sisters immediately across the room and quickly ducked behind a velvet pillar to hide, terrified they would drag her back to the washboards.

As she stood there nervously, she accidentally bumped into a handsome young man standing near the terrace doors. She felt an immediate wave of shyness and embarrassment, stammering an apology before trying to slip away.

The young man was actually the Prince. He had spent most of the evening hiding from the crowd because he knew that most of the attendees were only interested in his family's vast wealth and status. But here, standing right in front of him, was a girl who was genuinely shy, unassuming, and refreshingly authentic. He was about to ask her for a dance, but before he could form the words, she panicked and dashed away into the crowd.

The Prince possessed a piece of advanced, experimental technology: a specialized pair of high-tech augmented-reality glasses designed to cut through deceit. When worn, the lenses allowed his eyes to perceive true inner beauty and character. When he looked at most of the socialites in the room—even those considered conventionally stunning—the glasses revealed them to be vain, cold, and hideous on the inside.

Desperate to find the mysterious girl who had bumped into him, the Prince slipped on his special glasses and scanned the fleeing crowd. When his lenses focused on Cindy, the technology shifted. Through the glass, she transformed into the most breathtakingly radiant woman in the entire kingdom. Her dress was simple, but his enhanced vision allowed him to see her true, magnificent potential, her radiant soul shining brighter than any jewel in the room.

He searched frantically through the ballroom, calling out her name, but she was already heading toward the exit.

"Wait!" he yelled over the music.

But Cindy was running away as fast as her feet could carry her. Her step-sisters had spotted her briefly from across the room and hissed vicious threats about what would happen when she got home. She didn't want to cause trouble, nor did she want to face their wrath. In her panicked rush down the grand marble staircase, she nearly tripped over the steps, causing one of her bright, candy-colored shoes to slip off her foot and clatter onto the stone.

The Prince rushed forward and scooped up the discarded shoe. It was wonderfully unique—bright and candy-colored.

(As a linguistic footnote that amused the multilingual scholars of the court, it was well known that the Russian word for "eye"—glaz—sounded remarkably similar to the English word "glass." True to linguistic form, the Prince relied entirely on his specialized tech-glasses to let his eyes see the absolute truth).

Now, the Prince had Cindy’s candy-colored shoe, and he was determined to find its rightful owner. He knew she would be hiding back in the shadows of the poor districts, wearing her ragged, ordinary clothing. But armed with his high-tech glasses and the glowing memory of her spirit, he knew he would eventually find her.
